Washington & Carver 1952 Half Dollar Coins $15.00 each. These extremely popular privately minted Silver coins are a Commemorative issue honoring Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver two great African-American leaders.

Booker T. Washington was an American educator, author, orator, and advisor to presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. Washington was a key proponent of African-American businesses and one of the founders of the National Negro Business League. Washington gave a speech, known as the "Atlanta compromise," which brought him national fame. He called for black progress through education and entrepreneurship. Washington mobilized a nationwide coalition of middle-class blacks, church leaders, and white philanthropists and politicians, with a long-term goal of building the community's economic strength and pride by a focus on self-help and schooling.

George Washington Carver was an American botanist and inventor. Carver's reputation is largely based on his promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life. He spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts. He was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. He was widely recognized and praised for his many achievements and talents. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed Carver a "Black Leonardo".

The obverse of this coin features conjoined busts of the two men facing right, with Carver in the foreground. Their names are arranged in arcs around their busts, the names divided above by LIBERTY and below by the value HALF DOLLAR. Framing the periphery are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and IN GOD WE TRUST E PLURIBUS UNUM below. It is a very congested design with the little date of mintage wedged between this lettering to left of Carver’s portrait.

The reverse of this coin features a map of the continental United States. The letters U. S. A. are superimposed atop it. Around the periphery are the phrases FREEDOM AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL above and AMERICANISM below.
