The first redesigned Lincoln penny in 50 years was launched on Feb. 12, 2009. The design remembers and portrays Lincoln's early life and humble beginnings in Kentucky from the years 1809-1816. The reverse features a log cabin design symbolic of Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace and childhood.

The second 2009 Lincoln penny was official released on May 14, 2009. The design represents Lincoln’s formative years in Indiana from 1816-1830. The reverse features a young Lincoln sitting on a log with a book in hand while working as a rail splitter in Indiana.

The third 2009 Lincoln penny design was launched at the Old State Capital in Springfield, Illinois on August 13, 2009. The design represents Lincoln’s professional life in Illinois from 1830-1861. The reverse features Lincoln standing in front of the State Capitol in Illinois.

The fourth and final redesigned 2009 Lincoln penny  was launched on November 12, 2009, at 10:00 AM ET at the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial on the west side of the US Capitol. The design represents Lincoln’s Presidency in Washington, DC from 1861 to 1865. The reverse features the half finished United States Capitol dome in Washington, DC.

In 2010 the United States began issuing pennies with a new design on the reverse. This design depicts a shield with thirteen vertical stripes and bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A banner across the front reads ONE CENT. The style of the shield calls to mind an artistic style that was popular during the Civil War era, when President Lincoln preserved the splintering Union and set the United States back on the path to being healthy and whole again. The design contains symbolism that is important to Americans, including the 13 stripes to represent the 13 original colonies. The stripes support a horizontal bar bearing the motto that means "out of many, one," and which represent the federal government unifying the colonies together. This reverse design began appearing on pennies dated 2010, and is expected to remain in place for at least 25 years or until the one cent coin type is abolished in the United States.
